Spooky Sugar Cookies
I promised you Halloween decor and party ideas next week… but I just couldn’t wait! I love planning my Halloween party and I have a lot of recipe ideas to share. For the party, I like to have a mix of cute spooky and gross out weird decor and treats around the house. The lights are usually off, there’s a ton of candles, spider webs, flashing lights, scary movie references and fake spiders. Are you excited for Halloween yet? Maybe make these spooky sugar cookies and start costume brainstorming!
Spooky Sugar Cookies
Start out with this basic sugar cookie recipe from Martha Stewart.
Once the cookies are totally cooled, it’s time to ice. But the cookies have to actually be fully cooled before you ice! I love using royal icing. As a forever novice baker, royal frosting helps me look like a semi pro! It’s easier to control and create details with if you’re patient. That’s the key! Here are some tips from a semi professional cookie decorator/legit professional party thrower.
Use white powder royal icing. I purchase mine from the local baking store.
Have multiple bowls for the separate colors of icing.
Use piping bags and pastry decorating tips. I use a kit similar to this.
If you don’t have a kit, just use a zip lock bag and cut a tiny corner off. It’s all good! Probably a little messy… but work with what ya got!
Outline first. Start with the base color, outline, fill in, and let dry.
Wait until first layer of royal icing is dry before adding another layer, color, or detail.
Basic Halloween shapes are best. No need to get crazy if you are new to this. Stick to less colors but obvious shapes; ghost, pumpkin, black cat, candy corn, coffin etc. And how cute are these?!
The royal frosting creates this smooth professional look that keeps the sugar cookie soft. It will take a little bit to get the right consistency and color for the icing, but with the powder you can easily adjust and I know your friends will be impressed with your work. Happy Halloween!
